Newcastle City Council Meeting Considers Disc Golf Course, Amongst Other Topics

May 30, 2014

The Newcastle City Council met on May 20 for the second time in the month to consider a variety of issues facing the city. Major issues brought up include speeding on Southeast 75th Street, the potential installation of a disc golf course on the Southeast 95th Way property and the award of the pavement rehabilitation contract for the city.

Newcastle City Council Meeting Considers Disc Golf Course, Amongst Other Topics

Speeding on Southeast 75th Street

Residents on Southeast 75th Street used the first open comment period to voice their grievances with the speeding problem in their neighborhood. While the issue is not a new one, it could become more serious as the Renton District middle school is developed and completed. Of particular concern was the intersection between 125th Place Southeast and Southeast 75th Street. The council noted residents' requests for speed bumps in the area.

Disc Golf Course

The council announced at the meeting that it would need public feedback before granting permission to city staff to apply for funding for a proposed disc golf course on the Southeast 95th Way property. The property has been considered for numerous uses, including a sport parks and an off-leash dog park. The total cost for the project is $60k, and a grant, which would probably come from King County Youth Sports Facilities, would cover half the cost.

Pavement Rehabilitation

At the meeting the council approved the scope of work for the pavement rehabilitation plan that will begin this summer. You can access the report to determine if your street will be affected here. Scroll to page 190 for the list of streets that will be rehabilitated.

The next council meeting will be June 17, but the council is hosting its annual town hall meeting on June 3 from 7-9pm at the Golf Club at Newcastle, located near China Creek, one of Newcastle's most distinguished communities.
